QuickBooks Free Trial UK vs 90% Off: Which Saves More?
Short answer: the 90% discount saves more for almost everyone. The 30 day trial gives you one free month. The discount gives you 6 cheap months. And you cannot have both.
One year. Two checkout choices.

- 1. Open the UK deal. Follow the deal link to Intuit's UK pricing page and choose a suitable plan.
- 2. Choose Buy Now. The 30 day trial cannot be combined with the discount.
- 3. Review the checkout. Check the price + VAT, offer duration and renewal price before paying.
- 4. Keep a record. Save your confirmation and set a reminder before the promotion ends.
Key rule from Intuit's terms: if you take the discount you are not eligible for the 30 day free trial, and the free trial cannot be combined with the discount. Pick your path before you create an account.

Claim 90% off Sole Trader PlusHow the QuickBooks free trial works in the UK
The QuickBooks free trial gives you 30 days of full access to the plan you choose. You can connect your bank, raise invoices, snap receipts and look at reports. When the trial ends, the subscription moves to the full monthly price unless you cancel.
That makes the trial useful for one thing: checking whether QuickBooks fits the way you work. It is not a money saving tool. The best you can save is one month of the standard price, which is £10 on Sole Trader Plus and £16 on Simple Start.
How the 90% discount works
The discount takes 90% off your monthly subscription for your first 6 months. You pay from day one, but you pay very little. On Sole Trader Plus that is £1 a month + VAT instead of £10. On Simple Start it is £1.60 instead of £16.
There is no code to enter. You claim it by clicking through to Intuit's UK pricing page and selecting Buy Now rather than Free Trial. Full steps are on our QuickBooks discount code UK page.
The numbers, side by side
Here is how the two paths compare using the current prices in our config. All figures exclude VAT.
| Plan | 6 months: trial | 6 months: discount | 12 months: trial | 12 months: discount |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sole Trader Plus | £50 | £6 | £110 | £66 |
| Simple Start | £80 | £9.60 | £176 | £105.60 |
| Essentials | £190 | £22.80 | £418 | £250.80 |
| Plus | £280 | £33.60 | £616 | £369.60 |
| Advanced | £615 | £73.80 | £1353 | £811.80 |
On Sole Trader Plus over 6 months, the discount saves £44. On Simple Start over a full year, the saving is £70.40. The bigger the plan, the bigger the gap.
When the free trial makes more sense
There are a few honest cases where the trial is the better choice:
- You are genuinely unsure whether you need accounting software at all, and you would cancel within a month.
- You are comparing QuickBooks against Xero or FreeAgent and want to test both side by side. Our Xero vs QuickBooks UK comparison may save you that effort.
- Your accountant is setting you up and wants to check your data imports cleanly first.
Even then, the discount is low risk. You can cancel monthly, so the worst case is paying a few pounds for a month you did not need.
When the discount wins
For anyone who knows they need bookkeeping software, the discount wins. That includes most people reading this page:
- Sole traders and landlords preparing for MTD for Income Tax, who need HMRC recognised software anyway. See our QuickBooks Making Tax Digital guide.
- VAT registered businesses who must file VAT returns digitally.
- Limited companies moving from spreadsheets or desktop software.
- Anyone switching from another provider at year end.
Common mistakes to avoid
Starting a trial "just to look"
This is the most expensive mistake. Once a trial account exists, the new customer discount usually disappears from checkout. If you want to look around first, use Intuit's demo or watch a walkthrough instead.
Picking a plan that is too small
Sole Trader Plus does not submit VAT returns. If you are VAT registered, or will be soon, start on Simple Start. Moving up later is possible, but your promotional rate may not follow you. Our QuickBooks pricing UK page lists what each plan includes.
Forgetting VAT
All QuickBooks UK prices exclude VAT at 20%. VAT registered businesses can usually reclaim it. Others should add 20% when budgeting.
Our verdict
If you will use QuickBooks for more than one month, take the 90% discount and skip the free trial. The maths is not close. Use the calculator above to see the exact saving on your plan, then claim the deal with the button below.
Checkout side by side: the trial path vs the discount path
The two paths split at a single button on Intuit's pricing page. Here is what each one looks like from that click onwards, so you can see where the money is decided.
If you click Free Trial
- You create an Intuit account and land in QuickBooks straight away.
- The account shows a countdown of 30 days remaining.
- When the trial ends, billing starts at the full monthly price, for example £16 + VAT on Simple Start.
- If you later look for the 90% offer, checkout treats you as an existing customer.
If you click Buy Now through a deal link
- The basket shows the promotional price, £1.60 + VAT on Simple Start, and the 6 month duration.
- You pay the first discounted month and land in QuickBooks.
- Months two to 6 bill at the same promotional price.
- From month 7, the full price applies. You can still cancel monthly.
Break even: when would the trial ever win?
The trial saves one full month. The discount saves 90% on 6 months. On Simple Start, the trial is worth £16, while the discount is worth £86.40. The trial only comes out ahead if you would cancel inside the first month, because then you pay nothing instead of £1.60.
Put simply: if there is a reasonable chance you will still be using QuickBooks in month two, the discount wins. Over six months on Simple Start, the trial path costs £80 + VAT and the discount path £9.60 + VAT.
How to "try before you buy" without losing the discount
- Watch Intuit's product tours to see invoicing, bank feeds and reports before you sign up.
- Ask your accountant whether they already work with QuickBooks. Most UK practices do, and can tell you if it suits your setup.
- Treat the first discounted month as your trial. At £1 to £1.60 + VAT, cancelling after one month costs very little.
Trial vs discount by business type
Sole traders preparing for MTD for Income Tax need software anyway, so the trial rarely makes sense. Landlords are in the same position once their qualifying income passes the threshold. Limited companies switching from spreadsheets nearly always stay beyond month one. The only group where the trial is a fair choice is people still deciding between QuickBooks and another product, and even they can use the low first month on the discount instead.
Mistakes specific to the trial decision
Starting a trial on a different email "just to look"
It can seem clever to trial on one email and buy on another. In practice the business details, bank connection and card often link the two, and it creates two QuickBooks companies you then have to tidy up.
Letting the trial roll over
If you do take the trial, set a reminder. When it ends you move to full price, which is the most expensive way to own QuickBooks in year one.
Frequently asked questions
Does QuickBooks have a free trial in the UK?
Yes. Intuit offers a 30 day free trial on QuickBooks Online UK plans. You get full access, then pay the standard monthly price when the trial ends.
Can I use the QuickBooks free trial and the discount together?
No. Intuit's terms say that if you take the discount you are not eligible for the free trial, and the trial cannot be combined with the discount. You have to pick one.
Which saves more, the trial or the discount?
The discount, by a wide margin, for anyone who keeps QuickBooks longer than a month. The trial saves one month at full price. The discount saves 90% for 6 months.
If I start a trial, can I switch to the discount later?
Usually not. Once a trial account exists it is treated as an existing customer, so the new customer discount is not offered at checkout. Decide before you sign up.
Do I need a card for the QuickBooks free trial?
Intuit may ask for payment details at sign up so the subscription can continue after the trial. Set a reminder if you plan to cancel.
What does the discount path cost on Sole Trader Plus in year one?
£66 + VAT, against £110 + VAT on the trial path and £120 + VAT at full price.
Can I get the discount on a second business?
Each new QuickBooks company subscription is assessed separately. Use the deal link when creating it and check the price before paying.
Can I cancel QuickBooks during the discount period?
Yes. QuickBooks Online is billed monthly with no long contract, so you can cancel at any time and stop future payments.
